The Architecture of Isolation: The Making of "The Unbelonging"
From the very first sketch, I knew I wanted this character to be at odds with her environment. The plan was always to place her in front of a monotone, architectural world — a rigid backdrop that would act as a foil for a much more vibrant, expressive portrait. I wanted to see if I could capture that feeling of being physically present in a space while remaining entirely "other."
"The Unbelonging" is the result of that deliberate friction. While the city background follows a strict, muted rhythm, I let my gut take over for the figure. I pushed the saturation and the bold, "uncity-like" colors until she felt like she was vibrating in front of the work. In the following photos you can see my attempt to maintain that tension from the initial sketch to the final drips of color that cemented her status as an outsider in her own frame.
